These files were originally created by the Office of Aboriginal Liaison (Department of Chief Minister) and then handed over to the Department of Lands and Housing where they were superseded into a different number pattern. Lands and Housing then underwent various administrative changes and the files eventually became the property of Lands Administration within the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Environment in November 2001. The records cover the impact of Aboriginal Land Rights Legislation in areas such as Aboriginal stock routes, mining exploration leases, Sacred Sites, Coastal Waters and Community Living Areas to name a few. The files hold correspondence such as letters, memos and telegrams covering input from concerned industry groups and councils, Northern Lands Council, Government Ministers and Aboriginal Communities, and represent an historical insight into Aboriginal Land issues in the Northern Territory.
